Drops in Google Rankings

I received a call this week from a client that was "upset" that their #1 rankings dropped in Google search for a specific phrase.  I advised the client that I would look into the situation but not to panic.  I  advised them that Google often re-shuffles their algorithm and that on any day rankings could be effected,

In the end, I was right...the rankings were only effected for a few days and the site was back on track for #1 rankings.  So why do rankings change?

No One Knows..is the real answer.

Documented Google Rehashing Problem

On September 11,2007 my client called saying that their site was not on Page One for a search on their domain name "Moissanite".  The clients PC was located in the Midwest so I checked the same search phrases from New Jersey and this is what I saw:

Moissanite Rankings

They were #1 in New Jersey but nowhere on Page one in the Midwest.  Odd?  Yes,  but not uncommon when Google is reshuffling their database.

On  September 13, 2007 at approximately 10:00 am EST I entered the search phrase "Moissanite" in Google and my client www.moissanite.com was NOT on page one.  They have been #1 on Page One for a very long time and as you can see they were #1 in New Jersey on September 11th.

On September 13, 2007 at 10:44 PM  I entered the search phrase "Moissanite" in Google and my client was #1, Page One.   Why?

No One Knows..is the real answer...but 12 hours made a big difference!

Don't Panic

The moral of this story is that if your site drops off Google search results, don't panic immediately.  Check all the basic and then you just have to wait and see if it a temporary change or a permanent change.
